Harbottle & Jonas

A Tribe of Noise Spotlight Interview with a unique duo.

On Harbottle & Jonas’s website you will find:

Harbottle & Jonas are a stunning young folk duo based in Totnes, Devon. Their music is eclectic and always accompanied with a great story. Together the husband and wife duo combine the rich traditions of folk music with original and contemporary interpretations through a blend of closely intertwined vocal harmonies and compelling and authentic musical arrangements, blending concertina, harmonium, banjo, stomp box, acoustic guitar and dobra. They have developed a unique and original signature sound, that is unmistakably Harbottle and Jonas. They can sometimes be found playing alongside their full band of 8 members in total (cello, fiddle, mandolin, trumpet, drums, bass).

They have received plaudits from folk icons including Seth & Geoff Lakeman, Jon Boden, Rod Clements, Lankum, Declan Sinnott, BBC Introducing and have been endorsed by Seasalt Clothing. Their music had been streamed in excess of 1,000,000 times in 25 different countries and they have also played a gig with Martin Carthy. Well travelled across the UK and playing up to 200 gigs each year, Harbottle & Jonas have managed to establish themselves as one of the most exciting prospects on the folk circuit. Dave & Freya will be leading the folk course at The Internationally renowned Dartington Summer School this year.

But what is their creative process, what inspires them the most and what is their dream venue?

What is your creative process/how do you write your material?

Me (Dave) and Freya never write collaboratively...we always write separately and bring our ideas together and work on arrangement.

What inspires you the most?

We seek out interesting stories, local characters, history. A song should mean so much more than four chords and a beautiful melody. Each song is unique and has a quality that can change on each listen. Music is a fluid beast.

What makes you stand out musically?

We combine lyrical content that is challenging and thought provoking and we apply this to a catchy hook. Our music is very playful...on the surface at least.

What’s the last album or song that changed you?

That's a tough one! Fleet Foxes - Crack Up! That just came from nowhere...like a sucker punch. Love the concept and everything about that CD.

What’s the coolest gig you’ve ever played?

We played a sold-out show in Dartington Great Hall, Devon. There were 250 people at that gig...it felt like an amphitheatre, incredible.

What’s your dream venue?

Royal Albert Hall...definitely.
